There is, in fact, nothing unprecedented about the Trump regime. Oligarchical rule is not new in the US. Neither is the white supremacist character. These things have been baked into America from the beginning. This regime is the penultimate expression of what American politics and capitalism have always strived for. People can only afford to be shocked because the regime has dispensed with the little pleasantries and euphemisms of the past. But the behavior is nothing new.

Trump became a figurehead because he's fascist in a very basic way that American racists and misogynists of all stripes can relate to. He doesn't have a coherent ideology so people project whatever they want on him. That's also why he had some (minimal, fleeting) appeal outside of traditional GOP voters. But the more he's seen as one of the Epstein pedophiles or as capitulating to Israel and the "Biblical Armageddon" freaks, the more tensions arise within that fragile coalition.

Democrats desperately want there to be a compromise solution that makes the controversies go away while leaving the status quo they worked for in place, as if Trump could be restrained with the right court advisers, as if we wouldn't have the same problems regardless of whose name was on the desk, as if this isn't all according to plan.

A lot of this is sequelae to Democrats whiffing on Dreamers and immigration reform, on giving Bush / Cheney everything they wanted in the War on Terror, on letting Reagan and Clinton slash taxes and regulations while gutting the welfare system, and on and on back into the mists of time. The white moderate continually fucking everyone over to have their place in the sun next to the overt white nationalists.

The belief that mass deportations are needed because of crime or a drain on the system is objectively wrong and always has been regardless of which party and which president was doing it. It has always been a form of white supremacist hysteria. No matter how many times this has been pointed out, Democrats do it anyway. The lives torn apart or left hanging in limbo just didn't make the news. If it wasn't ICE and CBP doing it, it was regular cops.

Europeans are sometimes shocked that Trump would return to power, which I think is somewhat disingenuous given their own history with reactionary politics and strongmen leaders. But nevertheless. Aside from the pervasive racism and misogyny, it helps to understand that Americans have zero faith in their own government and institutions and labor under competitive authoritarianism where neither party intends to solve problems and control merely flips back and forth between them.

It was exasperating to learn during the Biden era how many people's political baseline is "basically Trump but I never have to hear about it." Those are the "liberals" who flock to politicians like Gavin Newsom who promise to do all the same terrible things as Trump but quietly and efficiently and with the rubber stamp of legitimacy.

As long as these people are in charge, they're going to continually ramp up the violence in pursuit of martial law and a fascist police state. In the short term, yes, it helps to paint them as the villains by showing them abusing peaceful protesters because a lot of white people especially don't get it yet. But they're going to pull the trigger eventually.

The entire premise of modern Democratic Party politics is that you can create a mathematically perfect platform that appeals to everyone, including the 30-35% of voters who are sociopaths. But every attempt has failed because of the contradictions inherent in including sociopaths in your base. The amorality of appealing to these people by throwing some other groups of people under the bus is repulsive to everyone who wants a better world, without whom your politics is self-serving and worthless.
